Rooster wishes he was as big as Moose so he could teach them swine a lesson. And despite their fewer number, the night-time bullies' piercing words burn the most, like poisoned blades with fatal consequences.

"Melancholy. What is your name?"

"...I have none to speak of. It has made me quite sad, indeed. But yours...yours is quite exquisite."

"If only I felt as my name did sound. Then, perhaps...I would know what joy is."

What is joy, Melancholy? Can it be seen? Can it be felt?"

"Joy is...joy is something that even I, being nearly a billion years old have not felt since...well...since you...you began to draw near me some 135,999 years ago!"

"Is it so? Is that the joy? For I have felt the same since I saw your saddened face...I just didn't know what to call it. We be sad no more?"

"We are sad, no more. I will name you, my new friend for millenia! I shall call you Kara, for you have brought this cheer into my heart."

"Oh, how I love it, Melancholy! We be fated together...yes?"

"Yes, Kara. We are indeed. Let no void allow your face to shrink into sadness, ever again."

"No, for this day, I have found a friend, and have been given a name."

...and the stars Melancholy and Kara shined for a billion more years, together...brighter and brighter still.

Hi all....I hope your holiday seasons have all been happy and safe! I've decided to kick off this new year by giving back to one of you awesome people who follow this funny ol blog of mine.
These sad stars are from an exhibition i did called Moon Garden....unfortunately they appear to be looking increasingly miserable. So.....if you feel you could put up with these sad sacks....or possibly cheer them up by giving them a new home here's what you need to do -

‘Twas the fright before Christmas, when all through the house
Every creature was stirring right down to the louse.
The stockings were strung by the chimney like a snare,
Ready to hang St. Nicholas by his hair.

The devils were hiding underneath their beds,
While visions of blood-drippings danced in their heads.
And Mama full of fear, I grabbed my strap,
Upon the rattling of chains, and a rap tap, tap, tap.

When out in the living room there was a loud shatter,
I jumped out of bed to a horrible splatter.
I ran to the window and got quite a gash,
The ghoul that was standing there gave me a slash.

The monstrous beast on the blood-splattered snow
Cast a spooky shadow on the objects below.
When what to my horrified eyes did appear,
But eight tiny demons creeping quietly near.

With an evil old leader, carrying a pick,
I knew right away this wasn’t St. Nick.
More rapid than ghosts his evil ones they came
And he bellowed and growled, and called them by name!

“Now, Slasher! Now, Slayer! Now, Killer and Mutilator!
On, Gutter! On, Mangler! On Strangler and Obliterator!
To the center of this house! Right down the hall!
Now snatch away! Snatch away! Snatch away all!”

As rotting flesh slowly decomposes and returns to the earth,
When it meets with insects, it becomes rather dearth.
So down to the basement the evil ones descended,
With the trunk full of rotting corpses, their journey ended.

And then, in such horror, I heard from below,
Scratching and gnawing, and then a loud blow.
As I looked down the basement stairs, I was rather confound,
I saw in the corner a huge grave mound.

The evil old leader’s hands dripping with blood,
His clothes they were torn and covered in crud.
A bundle of bones he had flung on his back,
Then he suddenly opened it and began to snack.

His eyes-how they were so black, his dimples large holes!
His cheeks were so pale, his nose like massive moles!
His huge cracked mouth was oozing green slime,
The beard on his chin was overtaken with grime.

The stump of a bone, he clenched in his teeth,
The stench was so strong it encased him like a sheath.
He had a monstrous face and a massively large gut
That hung past his knees with a large gaping cut.

He was grossly distorted, a frighteningly evil being,
And I cringed when I saw him, I wanted to run fleeing!
A piercing look from his eyes, that began glowing red,
My heart began to pound and I knew I was dead.

He spoke not a word, as he began digging up the ground,
And he piled the corpses right in a huge mound.
And sticking his finger inside of his nose,
He peered straight through me while I stood there froze.

He trudged up the stairs, with his demons all in a row,
Right out the front door they went, ever so slow.
But I heard him growl as he disappeared out of sight,
Good riddance to all, on this wonderful fright night!

Confronting the landscape

I was asked to take part in "Escape into the Land" a group exhibition of landscapes. It took me a long while to get my head around it as my work usually focuses on character....after many attempts I finally decided when all else fails turn the landscape into a monster.
The Exhibition is from the 8th Oct - 4th Nov at the Old Library Art Centre (preview Friday 7th Oct @ 5:30pm).

Babysitter and the Beast - written by Tex from Underneath the Juniper Tree

I was immediately suspicious of our new babysitter, the one with the big baleful eyes shadowed in what looked like chimney soot. Her inky black hair and crazed smile did nothing to calm my nerves. Her pale skin reeked of death. I tried in vain to hold tightly to Mother’s arm as she smiled at our new babysitter and left with Papa for the night. When the door clicked shut, I slowly turned to look at the strange girl…

Okay. Yes, she was rather kind and dreadfully charming. Instantly, she served us Sweet Lavender tea with more sugar cubes than our mother ever let us have!

But still...

And yes, she regaled us with fairy tales of distant worlds and beatific creatures. She taught us silly nursery rhymes we’d never heard before. Her bird, Dr. Reginald, squawked and danced as she sang off-tune nonsensical lyrics that had us cheering and laughing!

But still...

I must admit that sister and I had more than a little fun as we galloped around the cottage, following our babysitter in and out of each room, dancing and singing and laughing! We popped sugar cubes in our mouth as our babysitter pretended to give us a disappointed look, then we all giggled till we fell on the ground.
In time, little sister and I were quite worn out after our night of tippy-toe dancing, bellyache laughing, and hand clapping on beat to the strange girl’s fantastical poetry. The Sweet Lavender tea was doing its job in making us quite sleepy and we were hitting the expected lull from all the sugar cubes.
I snuggled with little sister on the rug near the fire in a tired daze, listening to our babysitter’s stories; stories that went from sweet fairy tales to something considerably different. As she spoke, her tone grew darker and each story became increasingly more ghastly. I wanted to stop her…ask her to sing us silly songs again. But I was so comfortable in my half-sleep state.
She told us stories of wolves, ghouls, and poisoned apples. Witches and evil stepmothers. She told us about parents leaving their children in the woods, and evil cannibalistic women. She told us of beast and man, fighting until beast won. Her words tumbled around in my sleepy mind: sinister queens, angry little men, ravens, tall dark castles, falling into eternal deep sleep.

My suspicions resurfaced...

Through vision, fuzzy from sleep, I noticed her big eyes look out the window. I followed her line of sight but couldn’t comprehend what I saw. I was sleepy. I was imagining things. Surly I was. I started to fall asleep again, little sister already blissfully there, until I remembered her words, eternal deep sleep.

Something was off...

Something was terribly wrong. And as I unwittingly drifted off to an anxious sleep, my worst suspicions were confirmed. The last thing I saw was our new babysitter staring down at us with her big baleful eyes, Dr. Reginald perched on one arm whilst she held the hand of a gigantic beast with stinging red eyes. The one I thought I saw out the window.

And he was licking his lips...

Whangarei artists celebrate the visiting rugby teams of Tonga, Canada and Japan by creating an eclectic mix of artistic treats in their flag colours red and white, as well as using black - the colour of the winning team.
Innovatively spread over 3 galleries- The Yvonne Rust Gallery @The Quarry Arts Centre is black/mangu, Hangar Gallery in Kamo Road is white/ma and Tuatara Gallery in Bank Street is whero/red.
The opening event will carry the crowd on a bus to all 3 galleries. A must see.

The GreatPlate exhibition will be the first show to grace the beautiful flat white walls of the brand new Yvonne Rust Gallery. This show is an important event being a wonderful showcase of the creativity of our supporting artist and the annual fundraiser for the Quarry Arts Centre. This year funds raised by the GreatPlate auction will go towards re-vamping the Quarry entrance so that right from the gate visitors will be struck with the creativity and vibrancy of the Quarry.
The GreatPlate auction will be live online from the 12th to the 19th August on www.trademe.co.nz search the keyword ‘Great Plate’. The Quarry will be able to place bids on behalf of those that do not have internet access.
